May 7th, 2013 - "Connections"

Whew!

With the way the day started out today I was a little worried I get to record today. Got’er done though!

Please help me welcome my new song, “Connections”.

2 guitars. One rhythm, one lead. Played all the way through. The lead guitar take was my 5th take (attempt).

So let’s see if this piece passes the RULES:
1. Yes, 2:20 minutes long
2. Yes, 2 guitar tracks.
3. Yes. Created, Recorded and Posted on 5/7/13

Have a great night and see you tomorrow!

May 6th, 2013 - "Alegrias Intro"

Lena had a request for my work today...

She needed me to compose an intro for an Alegrías choreography she’s working on. She showed me her choreography and I went to work. The intro only came out to 1:10 so I composed a bit more music to make my 1:30 limit for my compositions.

I JUST BARELY MADE IT!!! This composition comes in at 1:32 with the fade out. Yikes!

I used a new microphone today that I haven’t recorded with yet. I think it sounds great! What are your thoughts? It’s an Audio-Technica 2050. I…Read more

May 5th, 2013 - "Dancing in a Mirage"

I knew I wanted to implement loops today...
What are loops, you ask? Well, in this modern musical world we live in nowadays pretty much every music recording program comes with a bunch of short pre-written material that is usually in certain formats that lend themselves to being looped/repeated. I used several different percussion loops and one sound effect loop in this recording. I recorded all of the guitars (there are 7 tracks of different guitar parts).

Workflow is a bit different for me with loops. I…Read more

May 4th, 2013 - "If Only"

I’ve got a concert to prepare for so I’m keeping this short...

This is my first SOLO guitar piece of the month so I can only record 14 more of these to follow the rules. I improvised for about an hour this morning and came up with a cohesive piece. This is the longest piece of the challenge thus far. Nearly 4 minutes!!

I used a not-so-common tuning for flamenco guitarists…DADGAD.

So to end Day 4 I have to make sure the track meets my self-imposed rules...
1. Yes. 3 min. 58 sec. long
2. SOLO GUITAR!!!…Read more

May 3rd, 2013 - "Searching for Answers"

I want to dedicate this track to a family friend and an amazing artist, Joe Orr, who is dealing with an immeasurable and incomprehensible loss right now.  My prayers are with you, my friend.

Day 3. DONE! I had some technical difficulties today...
This whole journey is to make me more comfortable with my recording equipment. There's A LOT I do not know. My goal is to be at a confident place with my gear by the end of these 31 days. I am learning little golden kernels of knowledge each day thus far and…Read more

May 2nd, 2013 - "Tangos del Dia"

I was BEAT today! I put in a 14 hour work-day yesterday and was super-stressed....looks like it got to me a bit in the way of fatigue. But once I got up and moving around this morning I started to wake up.

It's kinda weird...I'm actually LEAST stressed about the creative process. I don't even THINK about what I'm actually going to create that day until I've got the guitar in my hand and then go...well, now what? Luckily, the ideas start flowing right away. We'll see how that goes by day 31....I'm optimistic…Read more

May 1st, 2013 - "May Beginnings"

May 1, 2013: Whew! Well, I did it! I started!!! The first day is a very important day and I did it! I'm patting myself on the back in case you can't tell....

You might be surprised by the first piece. It's not flamenco. Actually, it's not even acoustic guitar!!!!

Why, you ask?

Because the landscapers were here this morning and if I tried to record acoustic instruments you would have heard nothing but lawnmowers, weed-wackers and leaf-blowers!!!

My first intuition for a title for this song was, "…Read more
