Reflections on my May Recording Challenge

It is now July 27th, 2013. I ended my recording challenge nearly 2 months ago. Looking back at that month there are a few adjectives that come to mind…some positive, some not-so-positive: fulfilling, satisfying, educational, challenging, stressful, exhausting.

I started out with a great piece…I really liked #1. By day #3 I was wondering what I’d gotten myself into and seriously doubting my ability to compose, record and post a NEW song every single day for 30 days. By day #5…I doubted even more. I think it was around day #17 or so that I really felt emboldened that I could complete the task.

Primary reason I set this challenge up was to learn about my recording equipment. Did I accomplish a higher level in my knowledge-base and comfort-level. YES!!! I still have a ton to learn but I’m feeling much more optimistic about my abilities!

One of the main things I learned during this challenge was what TYPE of music was easiest to record and why… First, let me explain that I do not have a formal recording studio. I recorded this music in my home office that is not sound-proofed. Second, let me stress I’m at home and my wife also works at home and so it is unfair for me to expect her to sit silently all the live-long day while I try to record acoustic guitars with mics. Literally, every sound in our home can be heard.

So, I learned that the easiest type of music for me to create and record at all hours of the day and with whatever noise-level is being made throughout our home and outside by the neighbors is anything with electric guitar! I played more electric guitar in May than I have in YEARS! I had a blast though and came up with some great music!

In total, I recorded about 20 pieces of acoustic guitar and 10 pieces with electric guitar. I’m still an acoustic guitar kinda guy primarily but it was liberating to play on electric and create with that palette of sounds.

Overall, I’m SO GLAD I did it. It was a HUGE accomplishment. I have to give a single shout-out to a dear fan and friend of mine for keeping me going through the month of May. Gene Hauenstein, if it wasn’t for your positive messages and daily downloads of each track I don’t know that I would have made it to the end of my challenge. You were the wind beneath my wings, my friend!

Thanks to all of my fans for your support and I look forward to doing some semblance of this challenge again in the near future!

¡Olé!
